Barton Hill is an area in the east of Bristol.
In the postwar period, the area was designated a redevelopment area and proposals were drawn up in the 1950s to redevelop the area for housing. The first tower block to be approved was Barton House, which contained the heating facilities to power the rest of the estate, in 1956. Construction began the following year on the adjacent block Glendare House.
This was followed in 1961 with the commencement of construction of Phoenix House and Eccleston House. Stage 2, which consisted of four 15 storey blocks, began construction in 1962, and these were followed by the construction of Ashmead House in 1965. All the tower blocks, with the exception of Barton House, were constructed by Laing.
