Darnley is a housing estate in the south side of Glasgow. It was built between 1969 and 1975 with housing made up of mid rise housing consisting of streets of long deck access blocks on the site of Leggatson Farm, acquired by the city in 1938.
Darnley's creation came about when, after the creation of several peripheral housing estates like Drumchapel, Castlemilk and Easterhouse, there was still people living in the slums of inner city Glasgow ie Govan and there was limited space available to rehouse them. Hence, Darnley's objective was to accommodate as many people as possible on a small area of land between Nitshill and Thornliebank.
It was the last major municipal housing scheme to be completed by Glasgow City Council.
Originally, Darnley was planned to be largely a self supporting estate but financial restrictions led to these delusional plans only being half completed with schools, churches and a bowling green but little else, the nearest shopping area was the Pollok centre and folk relied on Ice cream vans. A small shopping centre and library were added in the late 1970s. Darnley became a forgotten place were people existed rather than lived.
When the estate was commence in 1969, multi storey living in Glasgow was still very popular although over the 6 years the estate was being built, public opinion changed dramatically and as such the proposed Darnley scheme was scrutinised. Although most of the estate had already been built by the early 70s and the foundations laid for the remaining blocks, the GCC, reduced the height of the last ten or so buildings from 7 to as little as 2 storeys.
The blocks in Darnley very quickly became run down as they had flat roofs designed for sunny Spain and not the West of Scotland which created massive damp problems and illetable and regeneration of the area came about very prematurely in 1994 and regeneration began with low rise terraced and semi detached homes. Three blocks remain:
While others have been demolished:
