Edinburgh is Scotland's capital city and is home to around 450,000 people.

Edinburgh has a history of high rise building with tenements as tall as 12 storeys being built in the Old Town area as early as the 18th century.

During the inter war years, many housing estates were built to provide better housing for those living in the crowded areas around the city centre, such as Dumbiedykes. This slum clearance program continued until the 1970s the war.

In the 1960s and 1970s, over 70 tower blocks were built in the city, the tallest being the 22 storey Martello Court in Muirhouse.

A regeneration of Edinburgh's housing commenced in the late 1980s, after problems emerged in some of the more flawed housing estates, such as Wester Hailes and Niddrie, At the time they were among the most deprived areas in the country.

In 2009, most of the city's tower blocks have been demolished and more are set to follow over the next decade.
