Govan is a district in the south side of Glasgow. It was the shipbuilding epicentre of the Scotland during the 19th and 20th centurys but only one yard remains due to the massive decline in the industry - BAE Govan Shipbuilders - one of the oldest ship yards in the world. The area lies west of The Gorbals, north of Cardonald, Bellahouston and Pollokshields, west of the town of Renfrew. The River Clyde defined Govan's northern boundary. Govan is recognised as one of the most deprived areas in the United Kingdom due to high unemployment, poor housing and social and cultural problems.
Housing in Govan is largely made up of tenements from the 19th and 20th centuries. Lots of Victorian tenements were demolished to make way for the Clyde Tunnel and the dual carriageway. Many of the Corporation stock are now being demolished to be replaced by the next generation of housing planned for the area.
