Hillpark is a housing estate in the southside of Glasgow. It is located north of Mansewood, south east of Kennishead and west of Newlands. It was developed on vacant land from 1966.
Controversy was caused in 1964 when the original plans to built 8 24 storey tower blocks at Hillpark were proposed. Angry middle class residents protested. It was the first time that high rises were going to be built in a established, wealthy community and also the fiurst time that high rises had faced fierce opposition.
The plans were scaled down and as such only five 8 storey point blocks were built along with three 6 storey deck access blocks. The Hillpark debacle signalled the beginning of the end for the high rise boom in the city.
