Riverside blocks
Hutchesontown is a district that makes up part of the Gorbals in Glasgow's south side. After decades of squalor and deprivation, it was earmarked for comprehensive development in the 1950s. The tenement slums were demolished to make way for exciting new high rise developments. It was one of the most ambitious projects of its time.
The daring initiative proved to be an expensive failure. The tower blocks were cheaply built and were deemed unsuitable for habitation in many cases. Most of Hutchesontown has seen continual regeneration since the late 1980s to reverse the damage caused by the ill-planned high rise estate most notably by the Crown Street Regeneration Project. Most of the tower blocks are either condemned or have been demolished already. Very few will survive.
