The Slum Clearance Act 1936 allowed Glasgow to continue to build new housing estates outside of the city centre to alleviate the serious problem of over crowding in the inner city areas of Townhead, Garnethill, Cowcaddens and Gorbals. It resulted in the creation of Blackhill and Provanmill in the north east and Calton in the east among others.
