Bakeman House at The Swan, prior to refurbishment
South Yardley is a large suburb near Yardley, in the southeast of Birmingham. The area underwent significant development in the postwar period as the Outer Ring Road was constructed through it. As part of the construction of the road, a large junction was built at The Swan, with a large shopping centre also constructed alongside it. Initially known as the Tivoli Centre, it was later renamed The Swan Shopping Centre. Above, a tower block named Bakeman House was constructed. The shopping centre has since been demolished and redeveloped, however Bakeman House remains and has been refurbished.
Also in South Yardley is the Clay Lane Estate, home to Wheeldon House.
